Chepstow Castle

The castle commands the riverbank like it's still got something to prove. Built in 1067 by William FitzOsbern right after the Norman invasion, Chepstow Castle sits on a cliff overlooking the Wye and immediately tells you why the Normans were so effective at conquest - they picked the defensible spots.

You're looking at proper medieval architecture here: the Great Tower, the curtain walls, the gatehouse. The stone's weathered but formidable, and as you walk the walls you can see exactly why no one fancied attacking it. The views across the river into England and down the Wye Valley are frankly excellent - on a clear day you can see for miles. Kids will enjoy scrambling around the different levels and towers, though it's not a playground; it requires actual interest in castles to stay engaged for more than an hour.

The whole thing takes about ninety minutes if you're thorough. It's free to enter the grounds, though there's a small charge if you want access to the tower and keep. The visitor centre's useful for context but not essential. Summer weekends get packed with tourists and family groups, so visit midweek or off-season if you can.
