Chedworth Roman Villa

You're walking through woodland in rural Gloucestershire, and suddenly the ground opens up to reveal the remains of a Roman villa that's been sitting here for nearly two thousand years. Chedworth is one of the largest Roman villas found in Britain, and what strikes you immediately is how much has survived - mosaics, hypocausts, whole rooms with their stone walls still standing.

The site works because the National Trust has done the unglamorous work properly. There are museum displays in the modern building that actually explain what you're looking at, rather than leaving you squinting at rubble. The mosaics are genuinely impressive, especially if you've never seen one in person before. You can walk around the excavated areas and get a real sense of how these wealthy Romans lived - the heating systems, the bathing complexes, the way the villa was laid out.

Histor buffs will spend a solid two to three hours here without getting bored. Families with younger kids might find it engaging for an hour, though it's not interactive in the modern sense. There are decent paths but it's on sloping ground, so reasonable fitness helps.

It's open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. Admission details aren't confirmed, but it's a National Trust property so expect a small fee. If you're based at Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club, it's only five miles away - close enough for an afternoon trip without committing your whole day. Cirencester, just down the road, has better restaurants if you want to make an evening of it.
