Cheddar Wood

The woods above Cheddar are proper Somerset - steep limestone valleys, ancient woodland, and views that stretch across the Mendips. You're walking through beech and ash, with the kind of dappled light that makes you understand why people get sentimental about English forests. The terrain is no joke though. Those paths climb quickly, and if you're expecting a gentle stroll through flatland, you'll find your legs doing the talking.

Most visitors are walkers tackling the longer routes that connect into the Cheddar Gorge trails - the woods form the upper reaches of what's a serious hiking destination. History types will appreciate the ancient woodland markers and the sense that these trees have stood here for centuries, though it's not somewhere with interpretation boards or formal archaeology. Kids might enjoy it for a couple of hours, but they'll need to be the type who actually want to walk rather than potter.

The woods work best as part of a broader Cheddar Gorge day out, not a standalone attraction. Free to access, naturally - it's working woodland. Best in spring when the bluebells show, or autumn when the colour is decent. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're doing a proper walk. Castle Farm Campsite sits just down the hill, making this an excellent spot for anyone basing themselves there. The climb is steep enough to feel like proper exercise, which some will love and others will find frustrating for what amounts to a woodland walk.
