Charvil Meadows

The meadows stretch out flat and proper green along the Thames Valley, just outside Henley-on-Thames. This is walking country - the kind of place where you follow a footpath and actually notice the seasons changing in the wildflowers. Spring brings cowslips and cuckoo flowers; by summer it's a riot of grass and open sky.

It's not dramatic landscape. No cliffs, no waterfalls, no Instagram moment waiting to happen. What you get instead is the thing that makes the Thames Valley worth visiting in the first place - space to breathe, water meadows that feel genuinely rural despite being minutes from town, and the sort of quiet that lets you hear yourself think.

Walkers will get the most from Charvil Meadows. The footpaths are straightforward, riverside views are decent, and it links nicely with other trails in the area if you're doing a longer day out. Birdwatchers should pack binoculars - this is proper wetland habitat. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour, unless you're the type that gets excited about spotting newts.

Free to access. Allow two hours if you're doing a proper loop walk, less if you're just popping down from Henley town centre for an air-clearing stroll. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

Based near Swiss Farm or Henley Four Oaks caravan sites, it's an easy add-on to a park holiday - close enough for an evening walk, proper enough to fill a morning if the weather's decent.
