The path across Charney Bassett Recreation Ground opens up unexpectedly - from the Witney side, you walk straight into proper wetland and grassland that feels far more rural than you'd expect from somewhere so close to town. This is an old water meadow, the kind of place that locals use but tourists somehow miss.

What strikes you first is the birdsong. The variety's genuinely impressive - great crested grebes on the water, reed warblers if you're visiting spring to summer, barn owls if you're lucky enough and quiet enough. The ground itself shifts between wet and dry depending on the season, which means the flora changes too. Summer brings marsh marigolds and ragged robin; winter leaves it open and melancholic.

It's ideal for birdwatchers and anyone after a gentle two-hour walk without the crowds you'd find elsewhere. Families with young kids will get restless after an hour, if I'm honest - there's not much interaction beyond looking. The paths are flat and mostly accessible, though muddy patches after rain are unavoidable.

Free to access, naturally. The Real Campsite sits just four and a half miles away, which makes this a solid half-day option if you're basing yourself there for a longer Oxfordshire break. Go early morning for the best light and, crucially, for the birds before people arrive. Late afternoon works too, though the sun angle's less kind.
