Rolling Sussex countryside doesn't scream wine country, but Charles Palmer Winery genuinely challenges that assumption. Located a short drive from Winchelsea, this working vineyard produces English wines that actually taste good - no polite sipping required. The estate sits on proper chalk downland, the same geology that makes Champagne work across the Channel, and you can taste the difference.

Visiting means wandering the vines themselves, which is the real draw. The views across the South Downs are tremendous, and on a clear day you'll understand why they chose this spot. There's a tasting room where you can sample their output - usually a crisp white and something with more structure. Staff know their stuff and won't oversell you on a bottle you don't want.

Allow two to three hours if you're taking it seriously, less if you just want a quick look and a glass. Families with older kids will manage fine, though it's not a theme park - expect contemplation rather than entertainment. Weekday visits are quieter than weekends. Check the website for opening times before you head out, as hours shift seasonally.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Camber Sands Holiday Park just down the road, this makes an excellent afternoon excursion. It's a proper working vineyard, not a tourist trap, which is exactly why it's worth the detour.
