Chapel Park

A marshy wetland reserve just outside Mintlaw that's proper rewarding if you know what to expect. Chapel Park is basically a peat bog with walking trails threaded through it - nothing fancy, but genuinely good for spotting birds and the odd roe deer if you're patient enough to stand still for five minutes.

The main appeal here is straightforward: it's free, accessible, and genuinely wild in a way that feels far removed from manicured nature reserves. You get open water, reed beds, and enough birdlife to justify bringing binoculars. Spring and early summer are your best bets when everything's nesting and noisy. Winter's quieter but muddy - proper muddy - so waterproof boots aren't optional.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're serious about the birdwatching. It's not a destination that'll eat up your whole day, but it works brilliantly as a morning walk alongside a caravan park stay. Aden Caravan & Camping is barely three-quarters of a mile away, so you could easily base yourself there and use Chapel Park as a gentle ramble before breakfast or after lunch.

Families with young kids might find it a bit limited - there's not much to do beyond walking and looking - but if your lot are into nature or you're keen on wildlife photography, this pays its way. The trails are manageable underfoot once you accept they're wet. Older walkers will appreciate the straightforward terrain and the chance to tick off some Scottish wetland birds without needing proper hiking boots.
