Chambered Grave

There's something properly sobering about standing over a 5,000-year-old burial chamber. The Chambered Grave near Ballymena is the real deal - an actual Neolithic tomb where Bronze Age folk were laid to rest, and it's just sitting there in the landscape waiting for you to find it.

What you're looking at is stone architecture from a time when writing hadn't been invented. The chamber itself is constructed from massive stones, many still in place, creating passages and burial spaces that archaeologists have been puzzling over for centuries. It's not flashy - no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive boards crowding the view. Just ancient stone and field.

This is genuinely for people who enjoy archaeology and don't mind a bit of detective work. If you want everything explained and handed to you, you'll find it frustrating. But if you're the type who gets a proper frisson from standing in front of actual prehistory - unrestored, unglamorous - you'll be hooked. Families with older kids (teenagers, really) who can handle the idea of mortality tend to get it. Younger children will ask when you're going to the gift shop, then get bored.

The location works well if you're based at Ocean View Pods or exploring Mid and East Antrim more broadly. Ballymena is close enough for supplies and a decent cup of tea afterwards. Allow an hour - half of that might be spent just finding the thing and getting your bearings. Free to visit, no permissions needed as far as anyone can tell.
