Chalkpit Wood

The chalk workings that gave this wood its name are long gone, but what remains is a proper little pocket of green just outside Hunstanton that punches above its weight. You're walking through mixed woodland - beech, oak, and pine - with the occasional flash of chalky ground underfoot reminding you of what came before. The paths are well-maintained and easy to navigate, nothing too taxing, so families with younger kids won't be wrestling with overgrown brambles.

It's not a massive place - you can do the lot in under an hour - but that's rather the point. This is the sort of spot you visit because you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Manor Park or Searles Leisure Resort and fancy a proper walk without loading the car up. The woodland has a genuine Norfolk feel to it, quieter than some of the busier nature reserves along the coast, and the tree cover keeps things cool even on warmer days.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the industrial archaeology angle, though there's not much signage explaining the chalk extraction. The wood works well as part of a broader coastal jaunt - combine it with a morning at Hunstanton's beaches or the clifftop walks, then head back inland here for some shade. Bring the dog if you've got one; it's that sort of place. No entry fees that I'm aware of, and no formal opening hours either, so it's yours to explore whenever suits.
