Chalford Vale Recreation Ground

The vale opens up suddenly as you approach from Stroud - a proper stretch of grassland and woodland that feels genuinely wild for the Cotswolds. Chalford Vale Recreation Ground is the sort of place locals use without fanfare, which is exactly why it works. There's woodland to wander through, open meadows for a proper walk, and enough trees to make you feel properly detached from the nearby town even though you're barely two miles away.

Walkers will get the most from it. The terrain's manageable - nothing too steep - so families with younger kids can cope easily enough, though it's not a destination attraction in itself. You're looking at an hour or so for a decent amble, maybe longer if you're the type to pause and spot wildlife. The meadows are genuinely good for birds and insects, particularly in spring and summer. Bring binoculars if you're keen on that sort of thing.

The real advantage is proximity to Stroud, especially if you're based at Middle Lypiatt Glamping or Tobacconist Farm Campsite nearby. Both are excellent, and this ground gives you a free option for burning off energy or getting a morning walk in before exploring the town itself. It's free - no gates, no tickets - which matters when you're on a tight budget. Best time is late spring through early autumn when the meadows are at their best. Winter's a bit grim, though the woodland does shelter you from the worst of it. Go early or late in the day if you want to see wildlife properly.
