Cefn Yr Argoed

The walk up Cefn Yr Argoed isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the views. Once you're up there - and Port Talbot spreads out below you like a map - you understand why locals rate this spot. The industrial landscape of the town contrasts oddly with the green slopes around you, and on a clear day you can see right across the valley.

It's the kind of peak that suits walkers wanting proper Welsh hillside without a full day's commitment. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the gradient. There's nothing fancy at the top - no café, no visitor centre - just space to catch your breath and take in the surrounding countryside. Allow an hour return if you're not rushing.

The weather matters here more than most places. Come on a grey day and the industrial sprawl dominates; hit it when it's clear and you've got something genuinely worth the effort. Willow Springs Campsite down in the valley makes a decent base if you're planning a few walks in the area - it's only 4.5 miles away and highly rated by other campers.

Free to visit, naturally. Go early if you can; midday crowds do find their way up here, and frankly it's better on your own.
