Cefn Don Recreation Ground

The Cefn Don Recreation Ground sits on the edge of Neath, a proper slice of Welsh countryside that doesn't announce itself with signs or visitor centres. It's a nature reserve, essentially - the kind of place where you wander in expecting little and find yourself lingering longer than planned.

The walking here is straightforward rather than dramatic. You get woodland paths that meander through mixed trees, open grassland where you can actually see what's about, and if you're lucky with timing, a decent showing of local wildlife. It's not Snowdonia-scale scenery, but that's rather the point. This is a working landscape, a place where the ground itself matters more than the views from it.

Families with younger children do well here - no major climbs to grind through, and the space to let kids run ahead without losing them round blind corners. Walkers after something short and low-commitment will find it perfectly decent for an hour or so. Those chasing rare birds or specific flora should check with local naturalist groups first, as conditions change.

It costs nothing to visit, which is always welcome. There's no infrastructure to speak of, so bring what you need. Early morning is best if you want to see anything that moves on four legs.
