Cefn Caer Roman Fort

The remains of a Roman fort sit quietly on a hillside above Machynlleth, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Cefn Caer was built around AD 75 to control the local lead and gold mining operations in mid-Wales, and walking the site today you can make out the ditch systems and ramparts that once protected a garrison. It's not dramatic stuff - no standing walls or reconstructed buildings - but for anyone interested in how Rome actually ran its provinces, it's properly absorbing.

The fort sprawls across open ground with good views down the valley, and you can spend a solid hour tracing the outline of the defences if you're keen on Roman military layout. The interpretation board does a decent job explaining what you're looking at, though there's not much else in the way of facilities. Historians and archaeology enthusiasts will get the most from a visit; families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract.

It's free to visit and accessible on foot from Machynlleth town itself - the walk up takes about thirty minutes depending on your route. Go on a clear day when the views are worth it. If you're staying at Gwerniago Campsite just down the road, it makes an easy half-morning excursion before heading elsewhere in the park system. Combine it with a wander around Machynlleth itself and you've got a decent local history morning sorted.
