Walk into Cayton Gill Wood near Knaresborough and you've got yourself a proper woodland experience without the crowds. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - all mature trees, dappled light filtering through, and enough green to make your eyes stop aching from screens. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, good for pacing out a decent hour or so, though it's not a major draw-your-breath sort of walk.

History buffs will find the place worth a wander for its industrial heritage - there's evidence of old workings scattered about if you know where to look. Beyond that, it's honest woodland rather than anything particularly showstopping. Children won't complain if they're the type to hunt for bugs and climb fallen logs, but the very young might find it a bit same-y after thirty minutes or so.

If you're based at Knaresborough Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, this sits right on your doorstep at 3.5 miles - perfect for burning off restless energy on day two or three of a park holiday. Woodhouse Farm Holiday Park is a bit further out at 6.3 miles, but equally accessible as a morning adventure before heading into Knaresborough proper for lunch.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn work best here. Summer gets a bit muggy and closed-in, while winter mud can be ankle-deep. It's free to access, no car park to speak of, and best treated as a stretch-your-legs addition to a broader Knaresborough visit rather than a destination in itself.
