Cavendish Park

The woodland here spreads across a proper chunk of land just outside Dalton-in-Furness, and it's the sort of place where you can actually breathe. Cavendish Park is a nature reserve rather than manicured gardens - think rougher edges, real wildlife, trees that haven't been pruned into submission.

You get woodland walks that meander without feeling staged, and if you're lucky with timing you might spot birds properly instead of catching a flash of feather. There's water running through it too, which keeps things interesting. The paths are decent underfoot most days, though after rain they can get squelchy.

This works well for families who like a gentle ramble without destination pressure, and walkers after a straightforward hour or two will find their legs stretched nicely. It's not dramatic - no fell views or dramatic gorges - but that's rather the point. Birdwatchers and anyone interested in native woodland ecology will get more from it than casual visitors.

I'd allow two hours to do it justice without rushing. The reserve appears to be freely accessible, which is brilliant. If you're staying at High Haume Glamping nearby, it's close enough for a morning or afternoon wander before heading back for a fire and dinner. Go when the light's decent - early morning or late afternoon - rather than the middle of a grey day. It's the quiet sort of place that rewards you for showing up, not the kind that dazzles from the car park.
