Cauldback Hill

The walk up Cauldback Hill takes you out of Dunfermline's suburban sprawl and into proper Fife countryside in about twenty minutes. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a rounded bump with a trig point at the top - but on a clear day the views across the Forth towards Edinburgh are genuinely worth the effort. The path itself is well-trodden and manageable, though it gets boggy underfoot in wet weather, so waterproof boots are essential.

You'll see walkers and locals up here regularly, often with dogs. The summit gives you a 360-degree perspective of the area: industrial bits of Dunfermline to one side, the coastline stretching towards Kinghorn Harbour to the other. A good hour sets you up nicely if you're mixing it with other activities - it's not an all-day commitment.

If you're staying at any of the nearby caravan parks - Green Oak Nature Retreat, Pettycur Bay, or Sandhills - this makes a cracking morning outing before heading back for lunch. Kinghorn Harbour is particularly close and worth combining with a coastal walk afterwards. The hill itself doesn't charge anything, just park sensibly at the base and go.

Honestly, it's less about destination and more about getting some air and perspective if you're using Dunfermline as a base. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it without complaint. It won't blow your mind, but it beats sitting in the caravan.
