Caudle Covert

Caudle Covert is a proper woodland walk just outside Gloucester - the kind of place locals know but visitors often miss. It's a small forest with decent-enough paths threading through beech and oak, good for stretching your legs without needing all-day hiking boots.

The appeal here is straightforward: mature trees, a bit of peace, and enough ground cover to make it feel properly wild even though you're minutes from the city. It's the sort of spot where you might actually see deer if you're quiet enough, though don't count on it. The walk itself takes about an hour at a decent pace, maybe ninety minutes if you're stopping to listen to birds or just having a wander.

Families with kids aged seven and up will get something from it. Younger ones might find it a touch dull without specific play equipment - it's genuinely just woodland, no visitor centre or cafe. Dog walkers genuinely love this place though. It's free and there are no visible restrictions.

If you're staying at Baldwin's Brook or Apple Tree Park (both three-and-a-half miles away), Caudle Covert makes a decent morning or late-afternoon escape without driving far. It won't rival the Forest of Dean, but it fills a gap if you want to break up a park holiday with something a touch wilder than the manicured grass. Go on a weekday morning if you can - weekends bring families and the paths get a bit choked.
