Castlefields Park Wellingborough

The old ironstone workings at Castlefields have been transformed into something genuinely worth an afternoon. It's a nature reserve now - proper regeneration work - with a string of lakes where the quarrying stopped, surrounded by rough grassland and developing woodland. You get good views across the water, and if you're patient, you'll spot waterfowl, dragonflies in summer, and the occasional heron working the shallows.

It's not dramatic scenery, but it works well for a gentler walk. The paths are straightforward, nothing technical, so families with younger kids won't struggle. Birdwatchers and photographers will find enough variety to keep them engaged for a couple of hours. The industrial history of the site - those extraction scars now softened by nature - adds a layer of interest beyond just the wildlife.

Wellingborough sits just up the road, which makes this a sensible addition to a broader Northamptonshire itinerary. If you're camping at Grendon Lakes, which is only a few miles away, Castlefields works as an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere. Free to visit, as far as I can tell, which doesn't hurt. Go on a calm day if you can - the reflections on the water lift the whole place, and the wildlife's more active when it's quiet. Leave an hour minimum, longer if you're seriously into birds.
