Castlebank Park

The Clyde Valley around Lanark holds some proper surprises if you know where to look. Castlebank Park sits right on the banks of the River Clyde - a nature reserve that feels genuinely wild for somewhere so close to civilization. You're walking through woodland that actually feels untamed, with the river constantly in earshot. The paths wind through native trees and scrubby undergrowth where you'll spot birds most visitors to the area completely miss.

It's a walker's spot more than anything else. Families with restless kids under eight might find an hour here enough - there's not a lot to actively "do" besides walk and look. But if you're the type who enjoys spotting wildlife or just wanting a proper riverside ramble without the crowds of bigger attractions, this delivers. The woodland canopy is thick enough that even on wet Scottish days it doesn't feel absolutely sodden underfoot.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so come prepared. The real magic happens mid-morning when the light filters through the trees and the place has actual atmosphere. Worth combining with Ecosse Glamping nearby if you're staying in the area - the site's only 3 miles off, making this an easy morning walk before heading elsewhere in the Clyde Valley. Free to access, naturally, and no time limits. Just turn up and explore. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but it's genuine.
