Castle TimJim sits just east of London, a museum housed in what feels like someone's elaborate private obsession brought to life. The castle itself is the draw - part genuine historical structure, part Victorian fantasy, depending on which wing you're wandering through. Inside you'll find the usual museum fare: period rooms, artefacts, the sort of objects that make you pause and think "people really did use that". It's not massive, so you won't need more than two hours here, three if you're the type to read every placard.

Walkers will appreciate the location - it's accessible from Lee Valley Campsite over in Sewardstone, only 5.8 miles away, making it a reasonable morning trip if you're based there. History enthusiasts will find enough to chew on, though it's not the sort of place that demands a return visit. Families with younger kids might find it a bit dry; there's not much interactive about it. Older children doing school projects on Tudor or Victorian life will get something useful out of it.

Admission details aren't entirely clear online, so ring ahead or check their website before you go - nothing worse than a wasted journey. The nearest proper town is London itself, which sounds ridiculous but is genuinely your best bet for supplies or a decent meal nearby. If you're doing the Lee Valley circuit, slot this in as a half-day activity rather than your main event.
