Castle Semple Country Park

Castle Semple's a proper water-based nature reserve that centres on a loch ringed by woodland - the sort of place where you actually see things rather than just walk round hoping to spot a bird. The reserve itself sits just outside Lochwinnoch in Renfrewshire, and it's genuinely worth the visit if you're into wetland habitat or just fancy a gentle wander with decent chances of spotting wildfowl.

What you get is a mix of walking trails at varying difficulty, a visitor centre with some useful information about what's living here, and the loch itself which draws a solid number of watchers during migration season. You'll see grebes, herons, ducks - the usual suspects for Scottish lowland reserves, but regularly. The trails loop around and through the surrounding woodland, and on a clear day the views back towards the water are lovely without being dramatic. Most folk spend two to three hours here comfortably.

Best suited to keen birders and families with older kids who can handle a proper walk. Younger children might find it a bit slow unless you make a game of spotting things. The reserve is free to access - you're not paying for entry - though the visitor centre may have a small donation box.

If you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean nearby, this works brilliantly as a morning activity before heading elsewhere. It's close enough that you're not burning half the day on travel, but far enough out that you actually feel like you've done something. Go early in the day for the best wildlife viewing and quieter paths.
