Castle Qua (side of)

The ruins of Castle Qua sit quietly on the outskirts of Lanark, more evocative than grand. What remains is essentially the side wall of a medieval fortress - stone and earth where a proper castle once stood - but there's something rather moving about seeing it in that state of honest decay.

This isn't a full day out. You're looking at twenty minutes to half an hour wandering around the perimeter, taking in the scale of what was built here centuries ago. The real appeal is for anyone interested in Scottish medieval fortifications without the crowds you'd get at somewhere like Bothwell Castle nearby. If you're walking through Lanark anyway, it's worth the slight detour to get a sense of how these structures were layered into the landscape.

The site is free to access and unmanned, which means you can visit whenever suits you. No crowds, no gift shop, no faffing about. There's nothing especially dramatic about the view, but if you're staying at Ecosse Glamping just down the road - which is a lovely spot for a proper rural break - you could easily incorporate this into a morning walk before heading elsewhere in South Lanarkshire.

History enthusiasts will find it interesting as part of the broader picture of medieval settlement patterns in the Lowlands. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming; older children who've studied Scottish castles will probably enjoy the reality check of what actually survives. It's genuine and understated rather than spectacular.
