Castle Park House

The woodlands around Castle Park House offer a proper escape from the tourist trail, even if the house itself isn't open to visitors. What you're really here for is the walk - ancient trees, quiet paths, and the kind of silence you don't get in towns. The reserve sits just outside Turriff, which makes it an easy half-day loop if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks.

It's woodland walking, nothing spectacular in terms of views, but the paths are well-maintained and there's enough shade to make it pleasant even on warmer days. You'll see old-growth oak and beech, occasional glimpses of the house itself through the trees, and if you're lucky, deer. Children will get bored after an hour or so unless they're into spotting wildlife. Adults after a decent walk will find it worth the effort.

The beauty here is proximity to other things. East Balthangie and Aden are both within five minutes' drive, so you can easily combine this with exploring the broader area - there's proper countryside around Turriff without the crowds. Admission appears to be free, which is worth knowing.

Go early or late in the day to avoid other walkers. Spring's lovely if you can time it. Allow 90 minutes for a relaxed circuit. Don't expect dramatic landscapes or grand architecture - this is quiet woodland, not Instagram material. But if you want fresh air and a proper walk without tramping up a mountain, it does the job.
