Castle Hill

Castle Hill rises sharply above Lochwinnoch, a proper scramble up to moorland views that'll catch most walkers out if they're not prepared for the gradient. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no ruins, no tower - just open ground where you can see across Renfrewshire and beyond on a clear day. That's rather the point though.

It's a short walk from town, maybe forty minutes up if you're not moving slowly, and the path's straightforward enough though muddy in patches after rain. The real appeal is the effort-to-reward ratio. You're not climbing Goatfell here, but you'll feel like you've actually done something and the views genuinely repay the leg work. Walkers will appreciate it more than families with small kids - the ascent's steady rather than child-friendly, and there's nothing at the top to occupy younger ones for long.

Go mid-week if you can. Weekends bring Glaswegians out in number and the footpath gets properly rammed. Summer's obvious but spring and autumn are honestly better - fewer midges, clearer air, and that low sun throws the landscape into proper relief. Allow an hour and a half for the round trip if you're not rushing.

If you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean - only five and a half miles away - this makes a solid morning outing before heading back for a late lunch. It's free, naturally. No facilities on the hill itself so bring water. Real mountains require less faffing about.
