Castle Hill

Castle Hill rises abruptly from the Moray landscape near Mosstodloch, offering one of those rare vantage points where you can actually see why someone chose to build a fortress here centuries ago. The walk up is straightforward enough - nothing technical, just a steady climb through moorland that rewards you with views across the region that stretch considerably further than you'd expect from a peak that doesn't look that imposing from below.

Walkers will find this genuinely worthwhile, particularly those who don't fancy the slog of the bigger Cairngorms peaks further south. It's the sort of place you can knock off in an afternoon without it dominating your entire day. The historical angle appeals too - the castle remains, though fragmentary, tell a story of medieval power struggles that shaped this corner of Scotland. Bring proper boots though; the ground can be boggy in places, and the wind up top has a bite to it even on seemingly mild days.

It's close enough that you won't waste time driving, but distinctive enough that it feels like a proper outing rather than a stroll around the holiday park. Allow two to three hours if you want to linger and take in the views without rushing. Free access, no visitor facilities, so pack water and a snack.
