Castle Green

A proper expanse of open grassland and woodland just outside Shaftesbury, Castle Green is one of those places locals know about but tourists somehow miss. The reserve spreads across the ridge above the town, offering views across the Blackmore Vale that genuinely do deserve the walk up. You're looking at mixed deciduous woodland bordering meadowland - nothing dramatic, but genuinely restful.

It's a walker's spot rather than a sit-down destination. The paths are easy enough, well-maintained, and loop through the site without requiring serious stamina. A couple of hours is the right amount of time to see everything properly. Spring and early summer are lovely when the wildflowers kick in; winter can feel a bit bleak and muddy.

Bring binoculars if you're into birdlife - I spotted nuthatches and various warblers on my visit, though nothing that made me gasp. Kids won't find it thrilling unless they're genuinely into nature spotting, but it's free and peaceful, which counts for something.

The location works well if you're staying at Gold Hill Glamping nearby - you can walk to it from there without needing the car. Shaftesbury itself has proper cafes and pubs worth investigating afterwards, so you can make a morning of it. Don't expect dramatic scenery or rare specimens. Go for the quiet, the views, and the fact that hardly anyone else will be there.
