Castell Talacharn

Stone walls rise from the hillside above Laugharne, where Dylan Thomas once wandered and wrote. Castell Talacharn - Laugharne Castle to most visitors - sits on this rocky outcrop overlooking the Taf estuary, its medieval towers still commanding impressive views across the mudflats and towards Carmarthen Bay.

Built in the 13th century, the castle saw plenty of action during Welsh rebellions and the Civil War. What remains today are substantial ruins that give a proper sense of how formidable this fortress once was. The Great Hall's windows frame the water perfectly - it's easy to see why this spot was chosen.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the castle's role in border conflicts, while families find it manageable for children without being overwhelming. The walk up from Laugharne village takes about ten minutes and isn't too taxing.
