Castell Nos Reservoir

The water sits dark and still, hemmed in by steep Welsh hillside. Castell Nos Reservoir, tucked into the valleys above Port Talbot, is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is precisely why it works. This isn't a leisure lake with cafés and paddle boats. It's a proper working reservoir, surrounded by conifer plantation and rough moorland, quiet enough to hear yourself think.

Walkers get the most from this one. The perimeter paths are straightforward enough - nothing too demanding - and you'll spot herons if you're lucky, maybe even a kestrel working the hillside. The water reflects the sky properly here, none of that artificial sheen. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the fishing community seems to know what they're doing for a reason.

It's free to walk around, and you can easily spend two hours here without feeling rushed, though an hour is realistic if you're just after a quick lake circuit. The best light comes mid-morning when the sun catches the water without too much glare from above. Summer weekends bring fewer walkers than you'd expect - most people miss it entirely, heading straight past towards the bigger attractions.
