Carter's Rough

Carter's Rough is a proper woodland walk just outside Crewe - the kind of place locals know well but tourists often miss. It's a modest forest patch, nothing dramatic, but the paths wind through decent tree cover and there's enough space to feel like you've actually left town behind. You're looking at maybe an hour or so if you want a proper wander, longer if you take your time and stop to appreciate the quiet.

The appeal here is straightforward. If you've got kids who need to burn off energy, or you're after a gentle nature walk without the crowds, this delivers. It's not a destination in itself - there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - but it works well as a break from the road if you're staying at Sunny Side Touring Park just down the way. The woodland's dense enough that you won't be staring at the car park the whole time, and there's enough of a path network to potter about without getting lost.

Head out in the quieter months if possible. Summer weekends can get a bit busy with locals doing the same thing you are. Free to access, obviously - it's just a forest. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper boots make sense rather than trainers. Nothing remarkable, but a solid hour's escape if you're camped nearby and the weather's playing ball.
