Carters Meadow

A stretch of grassland just outside Eye that most visitors driving past wouldn't give a second glance. But if you've got an hour to kill and you're the type who enjoys a proper walk through open countryside, Carters Meadow delivers exactly what it promises - nothing fancy, just good English rural landscape.

The meadow itself is fairly straightforward: rolling grassland with decent views across the Suffolk flatlands. You can wander the perimeter, spot farmland stretching to the horizon, and on a clear day pick out landmarks for miles around. It's the sort of place where you notice the light changing and remember why you came to this part of East Anglia in the first place.

Best suited to walkers rather than families with small children - there's little in the way of facilities or attractions beyond the walking itself. You'll want sturdy shoes in winter, as the ground can get boggy. Allow an hour or so, maybe longer if you're the type who stops to sketch or photograph. Free to access, naturally.

If you're staying at Hill Farm Suffolk or Goldings CL just down the road, this makes a sensible leg-stretch between pitch and pub. It won't change your life, but it's a solid addition to a wider walking itinerary through the area rather than a standalone reason to visit Eye.
