Carr Plantation sits on the edge of Richmond's green belt - a proper working forest rather than a manicured walk. The trees here are densely planted, mostly conifers, which means the light filters through in that particular woodland way that makes everything feel a bit hushed and serious. You're walking on forest floor, not tarmac paths, so boots are genuinely necessary rather than optional.

It's the sort of place that appeals to people who actually want a walk rather than a stroll. Walkers with decent fitness will spend a good hour or two in here without feeling rushed. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes - there's no playground, no "attraction" within the attraction. But if you've got teenagers who can navigate without constant entertainment, they'll probably enjoy the space and the relative solitude.

The plantation does what it says on the tin. Trees, paths, silence. You won't find opening times or admission charges because it's not that sort of place - it's simply there to walk through. Spring and early autumn are best; winter gets muddy and summer can feel a touch claustrophobic under all that canopy.

If you're based at Hewn Yorkshire just down the road, Carr Plantation makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion without much planning. It's functional rather than spectacular, but that's rather the point. Real woodland, no faffing about.
