Carn Tarsuinn

The walk up Carn Tarsuinn rewards you with one of those rare Scottish vistas where you can actually see what you came for - no cloud ceiling, no mist obscuring half the view. This modest peak overlooks Loch Ness from the east, and on a clear day the water stretches out properly beneath you rather than disappearing into grey nothing.

It's not a hard slog. The walk takes a couple of hours up and back from the road, and you're rewarded with panoramic views across the Highlands. The peak itself sits at a decent altitude without requiring serious scrambling skills or specialist equipment. What you're getting is a proper hill walk - the kind where your legs feel it but your mind stays clear enough to actually enjoy the scenery.

History buffs might find the vantage point interesting given this area's Jacobite connections, though Carn Tarsuinn itself is more about the views than any specific event. Families with older kids (say, 10 plus) who enjoy walking will get plenty from this. Younger children might struggle with the distance and gradient.

Fort Augustus sits just down the way, so it's a natural addition to a longer Loch Ness trip. Both Loch Ness Holiday Park and Inver Coille Camping are within striking distance - five miles or so - making this a solid half-day excursion if you're based around that area. Timing-wise, go on one of those rare Scottish days when visibility stretches beyond the next glen. Otherwise you're paying for the hike with a view of grey nothingness.
