Carn na Doire Leithe

Getting to Carn na Doire Leithe takes proper effort, but if you're the sort who likes a proper Highlands walk without the crowds of Ben Nevis, this one rewards you. The peak sits at just over 700 metres, which means it's a genuine climb rather than a stroll, but nothing you can't tackle in a day. The views from the top sweep across the Glen Affric area - serious, austere Highland terrain that feels properly remote even though Beauly is only a handful of miles away.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual ramble; expect two to three hours depending on fitness and conditions. The path can be boggy lower down, and the upper sections are exposed, so decent weather and proper boots aren't optional. Weather changes fast up here - I've seen it go from brilliant sunshine to cloud in twenty minutes.

You won't find facilities at the peak itself, so bring water and something to eat. The approach typically starts from Glen Affric side, which is where you'll spend most of your time getting oriented. If you're staying at Cannich Woodland Camping and Caravan Park, which sits about three miles away, this is an ideal half or full day out.

It's worth doing if you're serious about walking and want something in the Highlands that doesn't require booking tickets or queuing. But if you're after a gentle stroll with a cafe at the end, look elsewhere.
