Carn Bhliochdaich

Climbing Carn Bhliochdaich is less about the peak itself and more about what you can see from up there. This modest Highland hill sits above Drumnadrochit, and on a clear day the views across to the Great Glen are genuinely worth the effort - you're looking at the full spine of the Scottish Highlands spreading out in front of you.

It's not a lengthy trek. Most people manage the ascent and descent in under two hours, which makes it ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots or at Loch Ness Shores - you can be up and down before lunch without any faffing about. The path is straightforward enough for reasonably fit walkers, though it does get a bit steep towards the top. Families with older kids will cope fine; younger ones might find it tedious.

Go when the weather's actually decent. There's nothing to see from the top if it's clouded over, and the whole thing becomes pointless. Morning light tends to be best, especially if you're chasing photographs.

What makes Carn Bhliochdaich work is that it slots nicely into a wider Highland holiday without demanding too much time. If you're based at Loch Ness Glamping or the Caravanning Club site - both proper facilities - this gives you a proper walk with actual views rather than just a stroll around the loch shore. It's not remarkable, but it's a solid way to spend a morning.
