Carn an t-Seana-bhlair

The walk up Carn an t-Seana-bhlair from Fort Augustus isn't a gruelling slog, but it's not a gentle afternoon stroll either. This 2,227-metre peak sits on the eastern shore of Loch Ness, and the route demands a solid three to four hours return. You climb through moorland and rough ground with the loch constantly in view below - that's what makes it worthwhile, honestly.

The Highlands proper start here. On a clear day you'll see across the Great Glen towards Ben Nevis, and on murky days you'll get that brooding Scottish atmosphere that photographs never quite capture. The summit itself is fairly modest - a cairn, nothing more - but the 360-degree views justify the effort. People who want proper mountain walking without needing specialist gear will find this rewarding.

Don't expect crowds. This isn't Ben Lomond. It's popular with walkers who've based themselves at either Loch Ness Holiday Park or Inver Coille just outside Fort Augustus, and it works brilliantly as a half-day excursion while staying put for the week. Families with teenagers who can handle a steep pull will manage it fine. Younger kids will struggle with the unrelenting gradient and loose terrain.

Go early in the day. The weather can turn quickly, and you'll want maximum daylight for the descent. Free to climb, obviously - it's a Scottish hillside. Proper hill boots essential; the ground's boggy in places and loose rock is common.
