Carlin Tooth

Carlin Tooth is a proper fell in the Pennines, rising to just over 600 metres above the rolling moorland south of Hexham. The walk itself matters more than the summit - it's a straightforward tramp across open heathland with views that sprawl for miles in decent weather. You'll get the Tyne Valley laid out below and, on a clear day, the North Tyne watershed pushing northwards. The actual peak is nothing dramatic, just a cairn and some worn turf, but the approach from the south rewards you with widening perspectives.

Walkers and hillbaggers will find this useful for knocking off a peak without the commitment of something higher - two to three hours round trip depending on your pace and where you start. Families with confident walkers will manage it fine, though there's no shelter up there and the weather can turn nasty fast. It's the kind of hill that's forgettable on a grey day but absolutely singing when the light's right.

The real draw here is how neatly it slots into a Pennine walking trip. Base yourself at Kielder Campsite, which sits about 5 miles away and gives you access to miles of genuinely wild country - proper moorland, not Instagram backdrop. Carlin Tooth becomes one of several peaks worth collecting in the area without needing to drive between them. Free to walk, naturally. Go midweek in autumn when the heather's still showing colour but the summer crowds have cleared off.
