Captain's Pool

Crystal clear water stretches across this former sand quarry, now transformed into one of Worcestershire's most popular wild swimming spots. The lake sits deep in woodland near Kidderminster, accessible via a short woodland path that's proper muddy after rain - wear decent boots.

Swimmers come year-round for the surprisingly clean water, though it's bloody cold even in summer. The quarry sides drop off steeply, making this strictly for confident swimmers only. Families with young children should give it a miss - there are no lifeguards, no facilities, and the deep water starts almost immediately from the shore.

Dog walkers love the surrounding trails, and the car park (when you can find it) fills up quickly on sunny weekends. Getting here requires local knowledge - follow signs to Wolverley then hunt for the unmarked woodland entrance. It's not the easiest place to locate but that's half the appeal.

For those staying at nearby Wolverley Camping or Lincomb Lock Caravan Park, Captain's Pool makes a refreshing detour on hot days. Just don't expect Costa del Sol comforts - bring everything you need and take your rubbish home. The water temperature will wake you up faster than any espresso, but the setting is undeniably lovely once you're brave enough to take the plunge.
