Capel y Garn

High up on a hillside above Aberystwyth, this tiny stone chapel sits absolutely alone - just you, the wind, and genuinely spectacular views across Cardigan Bay. Built in the 1800s, Capel y Garn is the kind of place locals know about but tourists somehow miss, which is precisely why it's worth the scramble up.

The walk to reach it takes you through proper countryside, the sort of terrain where you actually feel like you've earned the view. Once you're there, the chapel itself is small and basic - whitewashed walls, simple interior - but the setting transforms it into something memorable. On a clear day you can see right across the coast towards Snowdonia. Even when the weather's moody, which it often is in West Wales, there's something rather moving about the isolation.

This appeals most to walkers and anyone interested in rural Welsh history, rather than families after a quick stop. Allow a good hour including the walk and a sit-down to take it in. There's no charge that I'm aware of, and it's free to wander around outside.

If you're staying at Cambrian Coast Holiday Park, just down the coast near Aberystwyth, this makes a brilliant half-day outing. The nearby Searivers Caravan Park is also well-placed for reaching it. The chapel works perfectly as part of a wider exploration of the Ceredigion hills - you're genuinely off the beaten track here, which is rather the point.
