Canoe Launch (Steps)

A set of stone steps leading down to the water's edge - that's all this is, really. But for canoeists and kayakers visiting Chester, it's the obvious launch point for paddling the Dee. The steps themselves are well-maintained and give you decent access without the scramble you'd face elsewhere along this stretch.

You're not coming here for the spectacle. What you get is functional infrastructure that works. The water's usually calm enough in the morning, and the location puts you within striking distance of some proper river scenery. Experienced paddlers will head downstream towards the weir and beyond. Beginners can potter about the quieter sections upstream.

If you're staying at Manor Wood - just two miles out - this is easily worth a morning trip if you've got your own boat. You'll need to be competent on water; the Dee moves, and currents shift. There's no hire facility here, no café, no visitor information board. You turn up, launch, paddle. It's not a destination in itself, more a jumping-off point for anyone serious about exploring the river.

Allow twenty minutes to unload and get on the water. Go early to avoid crowds and secure parking nearby. It's free to use, which is the only thing keeping it from being completely forgettable. But if you're a paddler, it does the job.
