Canisbay Kirk

The churchyard sits right on the edge of the world, or at least it feels that way when you're standing at Canisbay Kirk looking north towards Orkney. This isn't a grand cathedral - it's a modest, whitewashed kirk with real character, the kind of place that's been quietly getting on with things since the 16th century while the landscape around it has barely changed.

You can wander round the gravestones, which tell stories of shipwrecks and northern lives. The building itself is straightforward Presbyterian - whitewashed walls, simple windows - but there's something about the setting that makes it feel significant. On a clear day you can see across the Pentland Firth, and on a grey one (which is most days up here) the atmosphere turns properly moody.

It's free to visit and takes maybe twenty minutes to have a proper look around, longer if you're into reading epitaphs. The nearest town is Thurso, about fifteen minutes south, so this works as a stop-off rather than a destination in itself. If you're based at Little Croft Highlands campsite just down the road, it's absolutely worth a morning walk.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it - the kirk rewards curiosity about who's buried there and why. Kids might find it dull unless they're the type who like graveyards and old buildings. Park it in your itinerary as a gentle cultural break between longer Highland walks, not as a main event.
