Camrie Loch

The water here sits dark and still, ringed by moorland that rolls away toward distant hills. Camrie Loch isn't going to set your pulse racing - it's a modest body of water in the Dumfries and Galloway landscape, the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a pilgrimage to. But that's rather the point.

You can walk the perimeter if the mood takes you, though paths aren't particularly well-marked and the terrain can be boggy depending on rainfall. It's decent for a quiet stroll between Newton Stewart and the wider Galloway countryside, or as a breather if you're staying at Three Lochs Holiday Park nearby. The loch itself attracts the odd angler and the odd observer with binoculars looking for waterfowl. Don't expect facilities or visitor infrastructure.

Historically, it's one of several lochs that pepper this part of the Lowlands - geology rather than drama, which some folk will find restful and others will find a bit thin. Allow an hour if you're making a proper circuit, less if you're just popping over for a look. It works best as part of a broader day exploring the area rather than a standalone destination. Spring and autumn offer the clearest light and fewest midges. Free access, as far as I can tell, though there's nowhere to park grandly - a pull-in on the nearby road is your lot. Honest, unvarnished countryside, which is either exactly what you're after or it isn't.
