Camp Covert

The woodland here feels properly wild for Lincolnshire - all dense beech and oak with a genuine sense of remoteness despite being minutes from Market Rasen. Camp Covert is a former RAF airfield that's been left to the trees, and you can still spot traces of that history if you know where to look: concrete hardstandings crumbling under leaf litter, the ghost of old runways visible through the canopy.

Walkers get the most from this place. There's something oddly compelling about following overgrown paths where Lancasters once taxied, and the woodland tracks are solid going without being demanding. You're looking at a couple of hours minimum to explore it properly - longer if you're the type to stop and read the woodland. It's free to wander, though facilities are non-existent, so come prepared.

Honestly, it's not a day-trip destination on its own. But if you're based at Wolds View Country Park - just six miles away - it's a cracking addition to your holiday itinerary. The contrast between a manicured caravan park and this reclaimed space is exactly what makes it interesting. Bring the dog, bring proper boots, bring a camera if you're into industrial archaeology. Just don't expect a visitor centre or a café. This is the real thing: nature quietly winning back what was borrowed.
