Cammo Estate

The Cammo Estate sits on the western edge of Edinburgh, where the city finally stops pretending to be urban and admits defeat to the Pentland Hills beyond. It's a proper working nature reserve - not some manicured garden, but actual woodland with wetland areas and riverside paths that feel like you've actually left town.

You'll wander through mixed woodland where the Almond River does its thing, and if you time it right you might spot kingfishers or woodpeckers doing their work. The paths are well-maintained but muddy after rain, which is part of the charm. Most visits take about 90 minutes if you're walking at a normal pace and stopping occasionally to actually look at things.

Families with younger kids will find it engaging enough - there's enough water and wildlife to hold their attention - though teenagers might find it a bit slow unless they're into birdwatching. Serious walkers and nature types will get far more from it. The reserve is free to access and there's parking on-site, though it's limited, so arrive early on weekends.

If you're staying at Linwater Caravan Park just down the road near Newbridge, Cammo makes a decent morning or afternoon break without needing to venture into Edinburgh proper. It's the kind of place that reminds you why people bother living in Scotland rather than somewhere sensible.
