Camera Obscura

The Camera Obscura sits on Aberystwyth's seafront, a Victorian oddity that still works exactly as it did when first built. You climb into a darkened chamber and watch the real world project itself onto a white table below, upside down and back to front. It's properly clever - light enters through a lens at the top, and what you're seeing is the beach, the pier, the promenade, all live and moving. No screens, no digital tricks, just physics from the 1600s doing its thing in 2024.

This isn't something you'll spend hours on. Most people take 20 minutes, have a quick look, and move on. That said, if you've got curious kids or you're into the history of how Victorians entertained themselves, it's worth the detour. The view from the building itself is lovely too - you're looking straight down at Cardigan Bay.

The attraction works best as part of a wider Aberystwyth morning rather than a destination in itself. Park at Clarach Bay Holiday Village or Aber Bay Holiday Park - both within walking distance - then combine it with the seafront walks, the pier, and a chip shop lunch. You could easily fit in Aberystwyth Holiday Village as a base and build a proper seaside day around it. Practical visitor info is thin on the ground online, so ring ahead to check times and whether there's an entry fee. It's old enough that it might surprise you with its charm.
