Cambus Pools Nature Reserve

The Cambus Pools sit just outside Stirling in Clackmannanshire, a quiet corner of the Scottish Lowlands that most tourists drive straight past. It's a nature reserve centred on a series of shallow pools and wetland areas - the sort of place where you'll spot herons waiting motionless in the reeds and hear the crack of marsh birds disturbing the water at dawn.

This is genuinely worthwhile if you're into birdwatching or just want a proper walk without the crowds you'd get at better-known reserves. The pools themselves are peaceful year-round, though spring and autumn bring the migratory birds that make the site special. There's no charge to visit, and you can easily spend an hour or two wandering the paths depending on how serious you are about identification.

Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming - there's not much in the way of facilities or interpretation boards, and a restless kid will get bored after thirty minutes. Walkers, though, will appreciate the quiet and the chance to spot some decent wildlife without booking a guided tour.

If you're staying at Witches Craig or Highland Gateway - both excellent parks just a few miles away - Cambus Pools makes a good morning activity before heading into Stirling proper. It's the sort of place that rewards patience rather than spectacle. Go early, bring binoculars, and expect solitude.
