Camber Sands Beach Zone D

The stretch of sand at Camber Sands that locals call Zone D is where things actually get interesting. Most visitors pile into the main beach near Rye, but this corner feels quieter, proper golden when the light's right, and backed by decent dunes rather than just scraggly beach huts.

It's a long, flat expanse - the kind that looks deceptively empty until you realise there's genuinely enough space to spread out without feeling crowded even in summer. Families with young kids will appreciate the shallow gradient and lifeguards that run through the peak season. If you're after something more rugged, come winter or very early morning and you'll have stretches to yourself.

The walk from the car park varies depending on tide and season, but plan a good twenty minutes with little ones. No facilities actually on Zone D itself - grab what you need from Rye first. Parking can be tight on weekends, and you're paying for it.

It works well as part of a park stay at Herons Park, which is only five miles out. You get the beach day sorted, then retreat to proper facilities without the holiday park claustrophobia. The sand holds well for castles and digging, the water's cold but clean, and if you've got teenagers who think beach days are tedious, the sheer emptiness of it compared to the crowded sections might actually win them over. Worth the drive from the campsite.
