Callow Hill

You'll find Callow Hill rising above the Shropshire landscape just outside Craven Arms, a proper hill rather than a mountain but no less rewarding for that. It's a straightforward walk up to open moorland views across the surrounding countryside - the kind of spot where the effort pays off without eating up your whole afternoon.

This is walkers' territory, particularly those who've pitched up at one of the nearby parks like Greenway Touring and Glamping Park or Mountain Edge, both a short drive away. The ascent is doable for most fitness levels, though it's steeper towards the top than it first appears. Once up there, you get genuine views across the Shropshire Hills rather than the sort of view that looks better in photographs than from ground level.

The hill works well as part of a broader walking day in the area. Church Stretton sits just a few miles south and offers more substantial peaks if you fancy something meatier. Callow Hill itself is the sort of place you'd do in an hour or so, including a proper pause at the top with a flask and a biscuit.

It's free to walk, naturally - no gates, no fees, just open access. Best tackled in decent weather when visibility justifies the climb. Overcast days make the whole thing feel a bit pointless, if I'm honest. Come in autumn or spring when the weather's settled and you'll understand why people keep coming back.
