Caliph's Wood

The woodland around Durham isn't exactly famous, which is precisely why Caliph's Wood works so well. It's a proper forest walk rather than a manicured nature reserve - the kind of place where you can actually lose the crowds and hear yourself think.

The trees are dense enough to feel properly away from it all, even though you're only a few miles from Durham city centre. Paths wind through mixed woodland, and it's the sort of spot where dog walkers and local families come to burn off energy without needing to trek to the Lake District. The canopy does a job on rainy days too - not completely dry, but you'll stay considerably less soaked than in open moorland.

Walkers will find it decent for a two-hour loop. It's not dramatic or Alpine, but that's not the point. There's something grounding about woodland that doesn't insist on your attention. You can let kids run ahead without losing sight of them, and the forest floor is soft underfoot.

Head here in spring when the woodland floor comes alive, or autumn when the light filters through properly golden. Summer can feel a touch muggy under all that cover. Since it's free and unrestricted, you can turn up whenever suits you.
