Caldicot Town Centre

Caldicot's town centre is a proper working Welsh community, not some manicured tourist attraction. You'll find the usual high street suspects - a Tesco, chain restaurants, charity shops - but it's the castle that actually makes people stop and pay attention. The medieval fortress sits right next to the town, and even if you're just poking about the centre itself, you can't miss its stone walls looming over the car park.

The town serves as a useful base if you're exploring Monmouthshire on foot or by car. It's got the essentials - cafes, a decent pub or two, shops for picking up bits you've forgotten. Nothing fancy, nothing you couldn't find elsewhere, but it works. The people are friendly enough, and there's a genuine feel of a place that exists for locals rather than Instagram posts.

Worth a couple of hours if you're in the area, especially if you're staying at somewhere like Penhein Glamping nearby. You could grab lunch, wander the high street, then head to the castle itself. If you're expecting boutique shops and artisanal coffee, you'll be disappointed - this is authentic South Wales, not a prettified version of it. That's either brilliant or a bit flat depending on what you're after. The castle grounds are the real draw; the town centre is just convenient.
