Cairncockle

The walk up Cairncockle is straightforward enough, but the views from the top make it worth your time. You're looking out across South Lanarkshire from a modest height - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can pick out the landscape rolling away in proper layers of green and grey. The peak itself is bare and windswept, the kind of place where you feel properly outdoors rather than just ticking off a walk.

It's ideal for walkers who don't want to commit to a full day expedition. Most people manage the ascent and back in a couple of hours without breaking much of a sweat, though the ground can be boggy in places so decent boots matter. Families with teenagers will get on fine; younger kids might find it a bit relentless. There's no particular infrastructure up there - no café, no visitor centre, just you and the view.

Lanark's the nearest proper town if you need supplies before heading out, and it's well-positioned if you're basing yourself at Ecosse Glamping, just a few miles away. That makes a natural pairing - a morning walk up the hill, afternoon back at the site. The peak doesn't demand much time but rewards a visit with decent weather. Go when the wind's not absolutely howling and you'll understand why folk keep coming back to this corner of the Lowlands.
